Introducing the Windrose E1400 long range electric semi tractor

Introducing the Windrose E1400 long range electric semi tractor, soon to arrive in New Zealand.Etrucks Windrose E1400 long range electric semi tractor

Timing

  • The first Windrose E1400 demonstrator will arrive in late September 2024.
  • We will be able to accept orders for production trucks by mid 2025.

Recent Budget Announcement

  • The grant scheme for clean heavy vehicles was announced in the recent budget.
  • The quantum is $30 million over three years.
  • The grant scheme will mean a significant rebate on large BEV trucks like the Windrose.
  • Full details available in August.

Manufacture

  • The trucks for New Zealand will be assembled by Higer near Shanghai.

Rating

  • The maximum GCM of the Windrose E1400 will be 58t for the New Zealand market.
  • This will allow the truck to operate under HPMV permitting with Quad Semi and B Double configurations initially.

Battery choice

  • We have chosen LFP batteries for New Zealand.
  • They can offer a life of 3,000 cycles or more.
  • At 600km per charge that means 1,800,000 km of battery life.

Charging

  • The Windrose E1400 can be configured with megawatt charging (MCS) or dual gun CCS2. Either system will allow the addition of 400km of range in 35 minutes of charging.
  • This is an important consideration to future proof the trucks.

Duration

  • The Windrose E1400 has a loaded range (49t) of 670km (CHTC-TT)
  • Under New Zealand conditions it will be somewhat less, depending on trailer configurations etc.
  • However the truck will be capable of Auckland to Wellington with minimal on highway charging.
  • Then around half an hour charging and Picton to Christchurch is possible.
  • Then around another half hour charge and carry on to Dunedin.

Battery lease / battery as a service

  • We have partnered with Zenobe to offer a 10-year battery lease, if requested by the customers.
  • That takes the battery ownership risk away completely.

Zenobe Services

  • Battery monitoring & performance validation
  • Initial battery acceptance testing
  • One battery replacement in the 10 year lease
  • Zenobe take risk if truck off road due to battery issue
  • Warranty on battery sits with Zenobe
  • Used batteries repurposed into second life applications.

Energy savings

For TCO on the Windrose E1400 this is an estimate of the potential energy savings.

Kilometres Efficiency Fuel cost Total Annual Cost
Diesel use (at 45t GCM) 100,000 50 l/100km $1.70/litre $85,000
Electricity 100,000 1.2 kWh/km 15c/kWh $18,000
Annual Energy Savings $67,000

Duration

  • A recent test at 26t GCM for Decathalon resulted in 913km duration without top up charging.
  • On another test from Beijing to Guangzhou at 49t GCM, the journey of 2253km was achieved with only two on highway charging sessions.

The first XC975 PHEV hybrid loader at the factory. The small 130kW diesel starts automatically when the battery SOC falls to 20%. Fuel savings are around 30% on a conventional loader, and even more if you charge it often.
A short video of it operating on battery only is here:

XCMG’s hydrogen fuel cell loader is now in production. It does look a bit strange but you have to put the gas cylinders somewhere.

We can now quote the 55t XC9150 diesel electric loader. These can also be fully electric with a 1080kWh battery.

The 180 tonne operating weight XC9350 wheel loader with it’s 18mbucket at the factory. This one is diesel electric and could be developed as fully battery electric in 2025.

I had a quick drive of the latest version of our XCMG E700. The F4E5 offers a remarkably low 9,600kg tare weight and dual drive motors for 460kW (615hp) peak power. XCMG delivered 1000 heavy (more than 30T) EV trucks in March.

Our first XC975EV 23t electric wheel loader has arrived and will be used in Rotorua as a log loader.

One of the first XC968EVs delivered in China has just ticked past 19,000 hours. The battery is showing less than 8% degradation so far, indicating it is unlikely to need replacing during the useful life of the loader. We are now confident that the total cost of ownership of the XC968EV is less than any diesel equivalent.

We can now offer pricing on the XE60E electric excavator, call or email for details.

The 21t electric excavator has a new layout to make battery swapping possible with a hi-ab truck. The battery and counter weight will be swapped out together in under 10 minutes.

Our first two XC938EVs for New Zealand are now off line. XCMG is now building a battery electric wheel loader every 25 minutes.

We have signed to build a 7 series robotic battery swap station, initially for use in our Penrose hub. These two units will soon open in Guizhou.

An artists impression of a dual station setup.

Plenty of heavy EV’s at the factory on my last trip. XCMG retain their market leading position for heavy battery electric trucks, with roughly 60% of those being battery swap versions.

We also had a tour of the new XCMG/BYD JV battery packing facility. Here BYD blade cells are packed according to the requirements of each specific machine.

The file is 85Mb so it is best to download it to view a clear copy with some zoom. The range of equipment offered is extraordinary. Certainly the most comprehensive range of new energy products from any supplier.

More details on the 22t diesel/electric hybrid XC975-PHEV wheel loader. The loader runs a Yuchai 129kW generator which is rated at tier 4 emissions without using AdBlue. Fuel consumption is 30% less than a similar diesel loader.

Our 20kW DC mobile charger is now available. Just plug it in to a 32A 5 pin plug in your workshop and away you go.
